The most enjoyable part of my job has to be meeting with customers to design their wedding cake. Sometimes the Bride and Groom know exactly what they want down to the last detail but more often than not they’re happy to chat through ideas, look for inspiration, eat cake and slowly their Wedding cake design comes together.

When I met with Micky and Jonny I thought they knew exactly what they wanted. We started to talk about their day, their plans, colour scheme and stunning venue, Godwick Great Barn. We chatted about their likes and dislikes and it turns out they’re not that keen on fondant icing…….’Ok, so how about his idea instead?’

Within a matter of minutes we’d gone from a traditional fondant covered cake to a ‘Naked Cake’ with Sunflowers, fresh fruit and bunting all tied together with some lovely rustic raffia all sat on top of a large slice of tree!

Next we had to decide on flavours! After a little bit of discussion and some eating of cake, it was decided. They’d have a Lemon cake with lemon curd and buttercream, Victoria sponge with raspberry jam, another with strawberry jam and a final tier with black cherry filling (is it wrong that I’m feeling hungry for cake whilst writing this at 5am?!)

I can make pretty much any flavour imaginable. Red velvet, chocolate with salted caramel, black forest, raspberry and white chocolate, gin and tonic, carrot cake…….When it comes to wedding cake, Victoria sponge still seems to be most popular.

When I arrived to construct Micky and Jonnys wedding Naked Wedding Cake at Godwick Great Barn, I was certain that they had made the right choice of cake to fit in with their venue. The Grade II* listed barn is stunning with huge vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, brickwork. Outside is the most beautiful meadow with rural view across Godwicks’ deserted medieval village.

A huge thank you to Micky and Jonny for allowing me to share their beautiful photos by Jessica Elisze Photography
